Lower extremity rotational problems are common findings in children There are a number of reports on the angular profile of the knees in Nigerian children but only few of these report on the rotational profile of the lower extremity in these children. This study was carried out to establish normal values of the rotational profile of the lower limbs in Nigerian children residing in Benin City. The rotational profile of the lower limbs of 492 children aged between 3 and 10 years in Benin City were determined using clinical methods. The study was done between April 2010 and November 2010, an eight month period. Higher values of the mean Foot Progression Angle (FPA) were observed in male children aged 3 and 4 years while females aged 10 years exhibited the least values. The mean Thigh- Foot Angle (TFA) values were 3.7˚ and 5.0˚ for male and females respectively at the age of 3 years. In both sexes there was a progressive increase in the TFA to 15 ˚ by the age of 10 years. The mean Medial Hip Rotation Angle (MHRA) at 3 years was 40 ˚ and 41˚ respectively in male and female children with a gradual mean increase at age of 10 years recording 46 ° and 49.6 ° in males and females respectively. The Lateral Hip Rotation Angle (LHRA) in contrast to the MHRA showed decreased mean values as age increased. The mean LHRA values were 52.1˚ and 50˚ for males and females respectively at 3 years. These values decreased to 42˚ and 40˚ in males and females respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between both sexes in all these components of the rotational profile. These parameters showed similar trends with other studies done in children from other regions
