Abstract

BACKGROUND: Anaemia in pregnancy is a major health problem and an important cause of adverse fetomaternal outcomes in developing countries. Iron deficiency, diagnosed with low serum ferritin levels, is the cause of over half of the cases of anaemia in pregnancy. Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) has been linked with preterm delivery and maternal infectious morbidities. AIM: To determine the prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia among parturients and evaluate its relationship with fetomaternal outcomes in LUTH. METHODS: Two hundred and twenty (220) pregnant women were recruited for this study using the systematic sampling method. The relevant data of the women were obtained using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Blood samples for serum ferritin, haemoglobin concentration and packed cell volume were collected from each participant. A group consisting of participants with Iron deficiency anaemia was compared with normal participants without anaemia. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 23. Chi-square was utilized to evaluate association between categorical variables. Independent student t test was used to compare continuous variables. Logistic regression was used to determine the risk factors of IDA among the evaluated variables. Any p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
