Abstract

Study Title Impact of HIV Status on Antibody Response to Tetanus toxoid Immunisation among Primigravidae attending Antenatal Clinic in University College Hospital, Ibadan Objectives To determine the Impact of HIV Status on Tetanus antibody production and transplacental transfer to babies after Tetanus toxoid Immunization of Primigravidae attending antenatal care in University College Hospital, Ibadan Method This was a quasi-experimental study conducted in the labour ward of the University College Hospital, Ibadan. Transplacental transfer of specific IgG antibodies was studied in 15 pairs of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected Primigravidae and their neonates and 15 pairs of HIV uninfected Primigravidae and their neonates. Neonatal and maternal sera were assessed by ELISA for IgG antibodies to Tetanus toxoid. The outcome measure was reduction in Tetanus antibody production and transplacental transfer from HIV infected mothers to the babies. Associations between variables were tested by Chi Square test. A p-value of less than 0.05 was statistically significant
