Jaundice in the neonate is a common problem with the majority requiring no treatment. Some babies with jaundice, who have a high unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia, will require treatment with phototherapy or exchange blood transfusion to prevent bilirubin encephalopathy. Hypocalcaemia is one of the few complications of phototherapy in neonates. Calcium is important in maintaining normal homeostasis and hence needs to be maintained within a normal range. Hypocalcaemia in the newborn may present with serious manifestations such as apnea and seizures. Aim and objectives This study is aimed to document the incidence of hypocalcaemia among neonates on phototherapy with jaundice admi ted at Aminu Kano Teaching, Kano. It is aimed to compare the incidence of phototherapy induced hypocalcaemia between term and preterm neonates and to document the relationship between the dose of phototherapy (irradiance of phototherapy) and the incidence of hypocalcaemia.
