Abstract

BACKGROUND: Prolonged labour carries increased risk of maternal haemorrhage, puerperial sepsis, increased rate of Obstetrics interventions, as well as, perinatal morbidity and mortality. This may result from intrinsic factors affecting the cervix leading to poor cervical dilatation. Various agents have being used to accelerate the rate of cervical dilatation with subsequent reduction in the duration of labour, thus preventing prolonged labour. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of hyoscine in nulliparous women in terms of accelerating rate of cervical dilatation and reduction of 1st stage of labour in Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a comparative study of Hyoscine Butyl Bromide (HBB) and a placebo in terms of accelerating cervical dilatation in nulliparous women presenting in active phase of labour in Federal Teaching Hospital and annex- Mile 4 Hospital Abakaliki, and carried out among consented participants. A sample size of 174 was used, of which 86 received drug and eighty eight (88) received placebo. The participants were randomly selected using a computer generated random numbers. Neither the participant nor the investigator is aware of which one is drug or placebo. The rate of cervical dilatation and the duration of labour was monitored and documented. DATA ANALYSIS: Participant demographic characteristics and the rate of cervical dilatation were captured using a proforma. Data were entered into IBM SPSS, version 22.0 (2015, SPSS Inc., Chicago IL, USA)
