Abstract

Introduction: Liver diseases account for a significant number of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Liver biopsy and accurate histologic interpretation of the reports is an important aspect of management of patients with chronic liver diseases. Objective: The objective of this study was to document the histopathological patterns of liver biopsies in Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria over a ten- year period (2004-2013) and to review all cases of chronic viral hepatitis using Ishaq modified histologic activity index (HAI). Materials and methods: Formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue blocks and haematoxylin and eosin stained slides were studied. Special stains such as reticulin, perls, masson trichome and PAS were also used in further characterization of specific liver pathology. The biodata and clinical history of cases were extracted from accompanying case cards and departmental records.
