Abstract

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the hepatitis agents known to be transmitted through blood and blood products. Hepatitis C virus has been implicated as a major cause of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma worldwide. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of HCV among parturients at the Jos University Teaching Hospital and to determine the vertical transmission rate of HCV infection from mother to their babies. Setting: The labour ward unit of the Jos University Teaching Hospital Design: A cross-sectional descriptive study of mothers delivering at JUTH October 2012 and May 2013. Methods: A probability sampling technique using a simple random sampling technique was employed to recruit the pregnant women into the study until the sample size was obtained.
