Abstract

SUMMARY AIM AND OBJECTIVES The study was to determine glycated haemoglobin in healthy adult Nigerian men and women in Benin metropolis with the aim of establishing a local reference interval and examining the effects of age and gender on the haemoglobin status in the individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 120 healthy subjects both males and females aged 18 – 65years were studied after meeting the inclusion criteria. Glycated haemogloin was estimated by the cation – exchange chromatography method which is DCCT referenced. Reference interval was estimated by the non-parametric method as spelt out in the IFCC recommendation. RESULTS The reference interval for the studied population was 2.7% – 7.3%. There was a significant difference between values obtained for males 4.5%(1.1) mean (SD) which was lower than that for females 4.8%(1.1). There was no statistically significant difference in the glycated haemoglobin values with age. CONCLUSION. The reference interval for the studied population was 2.7% – 7.3%. Age and gender had significant effects on the glycated haemoglobin values obtained. While gender had a significant effect on the glycated haemoglobin values, age did not have any significant effect.
