Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is glucose intolerance of varying severity with onset or first diagnosis made in the index pregnancy which usually reverts back to normal after pregnancy or during the puerperium. It is impaired carbohydrate metabolism due to insulin resistance with associated pancreatic beta-cell deficiency. There is rising cases of glucose intolerance in pregnancy with its associated adverse maternal and foetal outcomes in Africa. Aim: To compare fasting plasma glucose (FPG) with random plasma glucose (RPG) among pregnant women as methods of screening for gestational diabetes mellitus. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study of 100 pregnant women who were selected to have screening for GDM done between gestational ages of 24 to 28 weeks using random plasma glucose and fasting plasma glucose. All the subjects had 75g oral glucose tolerance test as the gold standard. Venous plasma glucose assay was performed using glucose oxidase method. Strengths and Limitations of the Study: This study involved GDM screening using RPG and FPG as well as OGTT. The possibility of the recruited subjects not adhering to instructions before plasma glucose testing for GDM may affect the results.
