AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To determine the pattern of fundal pathologies in patients attending the dialysis clinic of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt ,Rivers State, with a view to early diagnosis and management of vision threatening complications of end-stage renal disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a hospital-based non-interventional cross-sectional study carried out from 28th February to 30th May 2013 at the Dialysis Clinic of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Rivers State, Nigeria. Consecutive adult patients aged 19 years and above were recruited into the study. A total of 85 patients on maintenance haemodialysis due to end-stage renal disease were examined. All patients had visual acuity test using the Snellen’s chart (alphabet and tumbling E). They subsequently had dilated direct and indirect fundoscopy performed on them and fundus photographs were taken. The data obtained were recorded in data sheets and analyzed by the use of Statistical Package EPI info version 6.04d software.
