Abstract

Objective: The study was carried out to determine the frequency of retinopathy among the diabetic patients attending diabetic clinic in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. Methodology: It was a non ‘intervention observational clinic based’ study carried out between 6th and 22nd of December 2011. Patients were selected consecutively as they arrived in the diabetic clinic. Semi structured questionnaire was used for each patient; the historical part of the questionnaire was completed by each patient with the assistance of junior resident doctors and nurses in the diabetic clinic. Biochemical parameters including recent fasting blood sugar (within 1week) and two hours post prandial, glycosylated hemoglobin (within last 3 months), lipid profile and serum electrolyte, and urea (within last 2 weeks) were extracted from the patient case file and result slip. Ophthalmological examination was conducted by the primary investigator (senior ophthalmic resident) after the visual acuity had been assessed by the junior resident. Slit Lamp examination and dilated funduscopy were carried out by the author. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS, version 16.0; a statistical computer program. Result: The minimum age of diabetic patient in this study was 20years and maximum was 90years with a mean age of 57.8+/- 11.6years. Most of the patients were married (269, 78.7%). Minimum duration of diabetes was one month while maximum duration of diabetes was forty-one years. Mean duration of diabetes was 7.1+/-5.9years. The bulk of the patients (307, 89.8%) had type 2 diabetes. The frequency of diabetic retinopathy in this study was 37.4%. Duration of diabetes was the strongest predictor for the development of diabetic retinopathy in this study (p<0.01).
