Sickle cell Anaemia (SCA) is one of the most common genetic hematologic diseases in the world. Over 70% of those affected are located in sub-Saharan Africa and Nigeria has the largest burden. Stroke in SCA is common and sudden with no warning signs. Some of the predictors of stroke in SCA are low foetal haemoglobin and abnormal flow in cerebral vessels. Early detection of SCA patients with the potential to develop stroke is the key to management. There is, therefore, the need for foetal haemoglobin estimation and transcranial Doppler ultrasound in stroke risk detection in Nigerian children in this locality.
