Aims/Objectives: The purpose of the study was to determine the incidence, pattern, risk factors of eye diseases and the magnitude of visual impairment in diabetes mellitus patients at the Jos University Teaching Hospital Jos, in order to obtain rational information that will be useful in planning eye care services for these patients. Materials and Methods: A hospital-based descriptive, cross sectional study was done, during which 300 consecutive diabetic patients attending the Endocrine Clinic at Jos University Teaching Hospital were fully evaluated. Precoded/pretested questionnaire was administered to the patients followed by detailed systematic ocular examination and the findings recorded. Examinations consisted of distance visual acuity measurement with best possible correction at 6 meters. The anterior segment of each eye was examined using the slit-lamp biomicroscope (Haag Streit). The intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured with by an applanation tonometer (Perkins). Then, a fully dilated fundoscopy was done with +90D volk lens and slit-lamp biomicroscope.
