EYE DISEASES AND THEIR MANAGEMENT BY GENERAL PRACTITIONERS AT THE GENERAL OUT-PATIENT UNIT OF A TERTIARY HOSPITAL IN SOUTH-EAST NIGERIA.

Abstract

Objectives: The study aimed to determine the pattern of eye diseases among patients at the General Outpatient Department (GOPD) of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital Parklane, Enugu; the proportion of patients with ocular problems who were correctly diagnosed and referred by the general practitioners (GPs) and also the self reported confidence of the GPs in tackling eye problems at the GOPD. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Information was obtained using interviewer-administered questionnaire on patients’ socio-demographics, ocular history, GPs’ diagnosis and whether the GPs referred the patient. The GPs’ practice of eye examination, confidence in managing and referral to the ophthalmologist of patients with eye diseases were also assessed using self-administered questionnaire. Ocular examination of patients included visual acuity measurement, anterior and posterior segments examination. Information obtained was analysedusing IBM SPSS version 23.
