Study design: Descriptive cross sectional study Aim: To identify eye changes in sickle cell disease patients attending sickle cell clinic at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, and the State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno State. Patients and Method: The eyes of one hundred and eighty eight consented sickle cell disease patients aged 5 years and above were examined for ocular abnormalities between 15th March and 21st September 2011. The patients were interviewed with the aid of a semi structured questionnaire by the author including their biodata, genotype, frequency of crisis in the previous year, and the hospital he/she attends for sickle cell clinic. Ophthalmologic examination included measurement of visual acuity, inspection of the ocular adnexia and cornea, slit lamp biomicroscopy and tonometry where possible, dilated fundoscopy using direct and indirect ophthalmoscope. Refractions were done for those with refractive error. The information obtained was entered into a semi-structured questionnaire and the result were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 16.0.
