Purpose: To determine the frequency of exfoliation syndrome and its association with ocular diseases in patients attending Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) Eye Hospital, Kano. Methods: The study was a hospital based cross-sectional study of consecutive newly registered patients aged 30 years and above attending ECWA Eye Hospital, Kano that presented between February 2015 and May 2015 who met the inclusion criteria for the study and signed the informed consent form. A questionnaire was administered to each participant and this was followed by a complete ophthalmic examination of both the anterior and posterior segments. The anterior segment examination included pen torch examination, tonometry, gonioscopy and detailed slit-lamp examination for presence or absence of exfoliation material, inflammatory cells and other abnormal findings. Patients with exfoliation material on the anterior lens surface and/or pupillary margin in either or both eyes were considered to have exfoliation syndrome (XFS). Those with suspicious optic disc had central visual field examination done. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0.
