Abstract

Exercise Induced Bronchospasm (EIB) is a condition in which physical activity triggers acute airway narrowing due to bronchospasm in susceptible individuals. Previously, demonstration of EIB was equated to asthma and used as an epidemiological tool for studying asthma. It is now however known that the presence of EIB is not equivalent to the presence of asthma. In line with most recent recommendations, people who manifest with EIB ought to be grouped into those with asthma (EIBA) or those having only exercise induced abnormal respiratory function test without asthma (EIBWA). As much as 20% of school aged children have been estimated to have EIB. In Nigeria, there is still a dearth of information on EIB as a clinical entity. This study provides information on EIB in South-East Nigeria and serves as an avenue for raising awareness on it.
