Abstract

Background: Despite the obvious advantages of delayed cord clamping, its practice has largely been limited due to lack of information about its benefits as well as concerns about its potential harm especially with delay in initiating resuscitation in a non-vigorous neonate. Umbilical cord milking (UCM) is a method of achieving increased placental transfusion, similar to delayed cord clamping, but with the advantages of a more rapid time frame and merits evaluation in our environment. Objective: To determine the efficacy of placental transfusion by delayed cord clamping versus umbilical cord milking in low risk parturients at term at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki. Materials and methods: This was an open labelled randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of delayed cord clamping versus umbilical cord milking on maternal and neonatal outcomes among low risk parturients undergoing vaginal delivery at term. Data was collected, computed and analyzed using statistical Package for Social Science (IBM SPSS) software (version 24, Chicago II, USA). Continuous variables were presented as mean and standard deviation (Mean ± 2SD), while categorical variables were presented as numbers and percentages. Comparison was made using t test and Chi square or Fisher’s exact test for continuous and discrete variables respectively. A difference with a P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
