Abstract

Background: Post-caesarean section infections are a major source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Widespread use of prophylactic antibiotics has not successfully eradicated these infections and caesarean section rates are reportedly rising. There is published evidence to suggest that pre-caesarean section vaginal cleansing with antiseptics may further reduce the burden of these infections. Information is lacking on this subject in the developing countries. Aim: To establish the effect of pre-caesarean delivery vaginal preparation with Povidone Iodine solution on infectious morbidity. Methodology: This was a randomized controlled trial involving 200 pregnant women on whom a decision had been made for caesarean delivery during the study period. The intervention group had pre- caesarean section vaginal cleansing with 2% povidone iodine solution while the control group had no vaginal cleansing. Data was analyzed with SPSS statistics software version 17.0.
