Abstract

Background: Caesarean section (CS) is one of the most frequently performed operations on women. Undilated cervix that is usually associated with ELCS is believed to increase the risk of PPH from uterine atony due to retained clots which can as well serve as a nidus for intrauterine infection. Aim: This study was aimed at determining the effect of mechanical dilatation of the cervix in reducing the incidence of PPH and endometritis following ELCS Methodology: The study population were booked pregnant women at EGA of 37 weeks or more with indication for ELCS at LTH Ogbomoso. Recruitment of the study population was done at ANC and ANW. Patients were recruited with emphasis on voluntary participation in the study. The participants were randomized into group with cervical dilatation and the group without cervical dilatation using computer generated numbers. Data management and analysis were done with Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. Statistical significance was set at P< 0.05.
