Abstract

Background: Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy associated with characteristic structural damage of optic nerve clinically seen as enlargement of the optic disc cup and associated visual loss. Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is recognized as an important cause of blindness, because it has been found to be responsible for as high as 22% of blindness in some parts of Nigeria. Glaucoma is associated with significant cost, both direct and indirect. Direct medical costs include ocular hypotensive drugs, physician and hospital visits, and glaucoma related procedures costs. The direct non-medical costs include transportation, cost of feeding and accommodation during visits to the health facility. Indirect costs reflect productivity loses such as days missed from work, as well as productivity costs borne by care givers such as family members and friends. Aim: The study aimed at determining the economic burden of cost of treatment among patients with POAG attending the Ophthalmology Clinic AKTH, Kano, Nigeria. Methodology: An observational study was used to assess 422 patients with POAG, selected using systematic random sampling technique. The clinical information as well as data on cost of treatment were determined and recorded. Data obtained was entered in to Microsoft Excel and analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 22.
