Background: Glaucoma is the commonest cause of irreversible blindness in Nigeria and is second to cataract as the commonest cause of blindness in Nigeria The treatment of glaucoma to patients is a lifetime obligation that is coupled with a considerable cost burden, both in terms of direct and indirect cost. Direct Health costs include antiglaucoma medications, consultation, investigations and glaucoma-related surgical or laser procedures costs. The direct non-health costs include transportation, cost of feeding and accommodation during the visit to the clinic. Indirect costs are the productivity losses such as days missed from work, as well as production costs borne by caregivers such as family members and friends. Aim: To estimate the economic burden of glaucoma in patients attending glaucoma clinic at National Eye Centre, Kaduna. Methods: The study was a hospital based cross-sectional study of 150 consecutive glaucomapatients on follow up visits to the glaucoma clinic between November, 2017 to January, 2018. The study was conducted using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. The study investigated the patients' monthly income, the method of funding glaucoma treatment, cost of treatment of glaucoma and the productivity loss during the course of a visit to the glaucoma clinic. Data obtained was entered and analysedusingSPSS version 24. Results: There was a total of 150 patients that participated in the study, with a male to female ratio of 1:1.1).Majority of respondents (65%) in the study were below the age of 60 yearswith a mean age of 55.36 (SD+/-13.7). Majority of the patients 90(66.7%) were either of professional or skilled occupation.The mean monthly direct health cost was ₦9,954 while the i mean direct non-health cost was ₦2,702 and mean productivity loss was₦ 1,168.A majority (91.7%) of the patients fund their treatment through OOP. There were only 14 (9.3%) patients that where subscribers of the National Health Insurance Scheme and there was none among the unskilled and unemployed respondents with monthly direct cost above their average monthly income. The direct non-healthcare cost of out of state patients per visit was higher than the average monthly cost of medications.The productivity loss per visits incurred was higher in the individual of higher occupation classesand when a companion accompanied them on the visit. Conclusion: Glaucoma is a chronic ocular conditionwhosetreatmentimposes a substantial economic burden to patients. Health policy makers must make glaucoma a priority disease in other to ensure that patients on treatment have affordable and quality care with lesseconomic burden through the provision of health insurance, cheaper, controlled generic drugs and equipping eye care providers with glaucoma management related equipment.
