Abstract

Background: Asymptomatic bacteriuria is a common bacterial condition during pregnancy, if untreated during pregnancy; it may result in symptomatic urinary tract infection with significant cause of perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. The increased health risk of asymptomatic bacteriuria during pregnancy is enormous thereby, making screening of pregnant women more appropriate especially in areas where prevalence is high like in our environment. Urine culture is considered gold standard but is costly, time consuming and needed expertise which is rarely available in remote areas of Nigeria. Therefore, there is need to evaluate simple, cheap, affordable but reliable forms of alternative investigations for quick diagnosis. Aim :To determine the sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and accuracy of leucocyte esterase and nitrite in rapid urine test in comparison with the gold standard urine culture in low resource setting such as ours. Methods: This was a cross sectional study that was carried out at the Obstetric and Gynaecological Department of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State over a period of six months. All pregnant women presenting for the first antenatal visit, who met the inclusion criteria and consented to participate in the study were recruited after a simple random sampling method was done. Those that picked Yes were recruited in the study. A questionnaire designed for the study was used for data collection and sterile urine sample bottle was given to them for urine collection. Clean-catch midstream urine specimens of pregnant women with no clinical features of urinary tract infection were collected. The sample was subjected to two tests; reagent dipstick test for nitrite and leucocyte esterase and laboratory microscopy, culture and sensitivity. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative xiv predictive values and accuracy of the dipstick were obtained after analysis was done using Statistical Product and Service Solution (IBM SPSS) software version 20, (Chicago II, USA).
