Abstract

BACKGROUND: Anaemia in pregnancy is a common problem in many developing countries. Appropriate management of the condition is based on the use of well accepted, inexpensive and simple tool that gives immediate result for its diagnosis. Tallquist’s Haemoglobin Colour Scale was subjected to scientific evaluation in this study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate Tallquist’s Haemoglobin Colour Scale in measurement of haemoglobin concentration and to compare the results obtained with that of Sysmex pcH100i® haematology analyser and Packed Cell Volume (PCV). METHOD: The Colour Scale and Sysmex instruments® were used to test aliquot of blood from 453 consecutive pregnant women during ante-natal booking clinics. PCV of the women were also done. Data were collected using a Proforma and analysed. Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the accuracy of the Colour Scale.
