AIM: To compare the cycloplegic effect of 1% atropine/ 1% cyclopentolate/ 1% cyclopentolate 1% tropicamide combination in children in order to obtain a solid database that will enable effective policy formulation on cycloplegic refraction in Nigerian children. METHODS: It was a cross-over interventional study of children 0 -15 years attending the eye clinic of U.I.T.H from November 2016 to August 2017. Systematic and stratified sampling technique was used to recruit the children and they were grouped into 0-5, 6-10, and 11-15years. A pre-cycloplegic refraction was obtained, thereafter 2 drops of 1% cyclopentolate was instilled into the right eye 5 minutes apart while a drop of 1% cyclopentolate and 1% tropicamide were instilled 5 minutes apart into the left eye. All the children had refraction by retinoscopy after one hour; in addition, children six years and above had auto refraction at 30, 45, and 60 minutes. Thereafter they all had post-dilatation pupillary assessment. 1% atropine drops was instilled by parents twice daily for three days before the return visit which was at 3 weeks to allow for the washout of the previous drugs. Refraction and pupillary assessment were repeated.
