Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the coverage and identify the barriers to uptake of trichiasis surgical services in Babura Local Government Area of Jigawa State with the view of making recommendations to reduce trachoma related disability / blindness. Methods: A population based survey was conducted in persons aged 15 years and above. A total of 2489 participants were examined. A two stage cluster random sampling technique was used to select the study population. About 110 villages (clusters) were randomly selected using computer generated numbers. The personal data including age, gender, marital status, occupation and literacy level of all the participants were recorded. Coverage rate of trachomatous trichiasis was estimated as percentage of respondents who had undergone TT surgery. Barriers to uptake of the services were determined by further enquiring participants’ reason for non-uptake of the services. Trachoma was assessed using WHO simplified grading system. Bivariate analysis with chi squared tests was done to determine associations between variables. Results: Of the 2489 participants examined, there were 1639 (65.8%) males and 850 (34.2%) females, (M: F 2:1). The prevalence of TT was found to be 7.6%. TT prevalence amongst females (13.4%) was found to be twice that of males. Participants aged 35 years and above had a higher prevalence (8.8%). There was a significant association between TT and age (p-value = 0.01) and gender (p value = 0.03). The coverage rate of TT surgery is low 11.2%. The barriers to lid surgeries were cost (62%), no need/benefit for surgery (26%) and lack of awareness (12%). The backlog of TT in Babura LGA is 10,962 and the minimum number of TT surgeries needed to meet up WHO recommendation is 10,666 surgeries.
