Abstract

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a public health problem with psychosocial implications for the couple especially in Africa. Assessment of ovarian reserve is one of the steps in the management of infertility. Follicle Stimulating hormone (FSH) is the most widely used among the ovarian reserve tests. However, anti-mullerian hormone(AMH) is a new marker with definite advantages over FSH. OBJECTIVES: To establish the relationship betweenrandom serum anti-mullerian hormone and basal FSH in fertile women; and compare these with corresponding levels of both hormones in women with infertility in Ile-Ife. METHODOLOGY: Serum samples were obtained from sixty four infertile women and sixty five fertile women attending clinics at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile Ife. Hormone analysis for basal Follicle stimulating hormone and random anti-Müllerian hormone were carried out with ELISA kits. The data was analysed usingStata version 13. A p value < 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. The basal serum levels FSH and random serum AMH levels were compared. Agespecific nomograms were generated using the natural log transformed values. Logistic regression was used to determine factors that were associated with deviation from the nomogram in infertile women.
