Abstract

BACKGROUND: Corneal ulcer is a potentially blinding disease condition that is generally found in eyes with predisposing risk factors. A variety of causes both infective and non infective contribute to development of the disease. OBJECTIVE: To carry out a study of corneal ulcers on patients presenting to the ophthalmic clinic of University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital(UNTH) Ituku – Ozalla, a tertiary Hospital, in Enugu State, South Eastern Nigeria. METHODS: This was a hospital based prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study of patients with corneal ulcers who presented to the Ophthalmic Clinic of UNTH from October 2011 to September 2012(twelve months). The study population was drawn from patients with corneal ulcer who presented to the Eye Unit of within the study period. A total of 61 subjects were recruited for the study and included those who satisfied the inclusion criterion. Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Committee of the UNTH prior to its commencement. All recruited subjects were managed according to World Health Organization Guidelines for the management of corneal ulcers. The subjects had their socio-demographic characteristics, presenting symptoms, predisposing risk factors, time of onset of the condition, duration of symptoms, associated ocular conditions, and other systemic diseases, well documented. The patients’ presenting visual acuities were then measured. All subjects were examined on the slit- lamp biomicroscope documenting features of the corneal ulcer. Thereafter, corneal scrapes were collected and inoculated onto the appropriate culture media. The results are interpreted after the standard incubation periods for each organism.
