Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine the corneal sensitivity among diabetics attending Lagos University Teaching Hospital, compared to their age-sex matched controls as well as its relationship to diabetic retinopathy, with a view to proposing its use as a screening tool for diabetic retinopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was a hospital-based case-control study comparing corneal sensitivity in diabetics aged 25-65 years with their age-sex matched controls at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos State. Ethical Approval was obtained from the Health Research and Ethics Committee of Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Patient were selected consecutively at the Diabetic clinic and Diabetic Eye clinic, LUTH. Controls were recruited from General Out-Patient department. Interviewer-based questionnaire was administered. Corneal sensitivity was assessed with Cochet-Bonnet Aesthesiometer. Binocular dilated fundoscopy was carried out with the aid of Slit-lamp using +78D lens and Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscope. Data were analyzed using commercially available statistical data management software- STATA Intercooled (IC) (statistical version 13.1, STATA Corp, College Station, TX USA). Level of significance was set at 5%.
