Abstract

Objective: To determine the pre- and post-operative conjunctival bacterial isolates and the antibiotic susceptibility pattern in patients scheduled for intraocular procedures in Guinness Eye Centre, Lagos University Teaching hospital (LUTH) Methodology: This was a descriptive hospital based study of patients scheduled for series of intraocular procedures in Guinness Eye Centre of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). Pre- and post-operative conjunctival bacterial flora and sensitivity pattern were assessed. One hundred and thirty patients in all. Cataract surgery- 121 patients, accounted for 92.1%, Trabeculectomy- 4 patients accounted for 4.3%, and intravitreal injections- 5 patients contributed 3.6% of patients recruited into the study between August and November, 2014. The patients had their biodata in structured questionnaires divided into three sections, namely socio-demographic, clinical and laboratory sections. Conjunctival swabs were obtained from the inferior fornix in both the operated eyes and the fellow control eyes pre and post operatively. The swabs were immediately inoculated into blood agar plates and transported to the laboratory for microscopy, culture and sensitivity.
