Objective: To compare the outcome of labour using partograph with an individualized alert and action line drawn 2hour, 3hour and 4hour apart. Methods: A prospective randomized study of 420 primigravidae with uncomplicated pregnancies, in spontaneous onset of labour was carried out at Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki over a 19 month period. A total of 140 women were randomly allocated to one of three arms of the study in which a partogram with a 2 hour, 3 hour and 4 hour action line were used to monitor labour progress. The primary outcome measure was caesarean delivery rate, while secondary outcome measures were rate of augmentation, duration of labour, Apgar scores, blood loss at delivery, neonatal intensive care unit admission and maternal satisfaction. The data obtained were analyzed using Epi Info version 7.1.4 [Chicago, 2014] statistical software package. Statistical significance was considered when P < 0.05.
