Abstract

Background: Preeclampsia is a major cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The disease is poorly understood despite extensive researches. High serum iron levels have been associated with preeclampsia, probably a contributory factor to its aetiology. In developing countries like Nigeria, iron deficiency anaemia is prevalent; hence routine iron supplementation is given to all women in antenatal period. Meanwhile, preeclampsia and eclampsia are the most common cause of maternal mortality in Sokoto. Therefore, it will be pertinent to determine the relationship between serum iron and ferritin levels in preeclamptic women in Sokoto. Aim: To determine the serum iron and ferritin levels among women with preeclampsia and normotensive controls and its correlation with the severity of preeclampsia Methodology: This was a case control study among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching hospital, Sokoto. This included pregnant women with preeclampsia and normotensive pregnant women. Venous blood was collected by venipuncture (5millilitres) from each client and transferred immediately into plain containers. The blood samples were taken to the chemical pathology laboratory of UDUTH and serum ferritin was analysed using ELISA, while serum iron was analysed by colorimetry using the Nitro-PAPS method. The serum iron and ferritin results obtained were compared between preeclamptics and normotensive pregnant women. Data analysis was done with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22. Level of significance was set at p< 0.05
