Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy have been associated with electrolyte abnormalities in the mother and these abnormalities have a potential to reflect in the baby. Abnormalities in electrolyte levels in the newborn often present with non-specific signs; thus there is a need for a high index of suspicion and this would be made possible by investigating the influence of maternal hypertensive disorders on the baby’s electrolyte patterns. Aim: This study aimed to determine the cord blood values of sodium, potassium, chloride and bicarbonate in the newborns of mothers with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and compare with the maternal values. Mother-baby pairs from normotensive pregnancies were included for objective comparison.
