Abstract

Background: Failure in trophoblastic invasion and the induction of an inflammatory response within the placenta in patients with preeclampsia triggers the expression of CA125, thus making CA125 a potential marker reflecting the severity of preeclampsia. Early-onset preeclampsia also poses a peculiar challenge to the Obstetric team in economically disadvantaged countries where intensive care facilities that can rapidly respond to preeclampsia-related threats to women and infants are limited. With gestational age at delivery being a key factor that decides neonatal; outcome, it is therefore important, especially in low-resource settings to identify simple and sensitive tests that can quantify risks and identify which pregnancies can be safely prolonged in early-onset preeclampsia. Aim/Objectives: The objective of this study is to compare CA125 levels in preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant women and to find the association between serum CA125 levels and preeclampsia. Methodology: A cross-sectional study of preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant women at A.K.T.H. Relevant information was obtained from preeclamptic women and an equal number of controls. Blood samples were taken and analysed for CA125 levels and urine samples taken for identification of proteinuria. Percentages, means and standard deviation were calculated. Studentt test was used to compare quantitative variables. Chi-square test and Fischer’s test were used to test for association between qualitative variables at 99% confidence interval. Linear relationship between two quantitative variables was estimated using the Pearson’s coefficient ‘r’. p value less than 0.01 was taken as statistically significant.
