GENERAL AIM To determine the prevalence and pattern of ocular morbidities associated with Chronic Kidney Disease in the Jos University Teaching Hospital. 1.3 1. 2. 3. 4. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence of ocular disorders amongst CKD patients. To determine relationship between duration of CKD and eye disease. To determine the pattern and compare the types of ocular morbidity with the degree of GFR. To make recommendations based on findings that will hopefully help in the management of CKD patients. CONCLUSION Ocular morbidities are common among CKD patients. The prevalence of ocular morbidity among CKD patients attending the Nephrology clinic in Jos University Teaching was 90.2%, while the prevalence of blindness was 9.0%. The most common anterior segment finding was conjunctival pallor. Hypertensive retinopathy was the commonest finding in the posterior segment. The major causes of visual impairment were hypertensive retinopathy, cataract, macular oedema, glaucoma and vitreous haemorrhage. No consistent relationship was established between serum calcium and corneo-conjunctival deposits. Most participants had not had ophthalmological assessment since they were diagnosed with CKD. Awareness of the potential ocular complications of the disease process is needed. Regular eye exam with prompt referral could be very helpful in improving the quality of life and prognosis of CKD patients.
