Abstract

Introduction: Anovulation is an important cause of infertility in sub-Saharan Africa and accounts for 15- 23.8% of infertility while hyperprolactinaemia accounts for 5-10% of anovulatory disorders in women. Comparative levels of prolactin related to infertility and clinical characteristics are seldomly reported. Aim: To determine the serum prolactin levels and its clinical correlates in women presenting with infertility at the gynaecologic clinic of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) Ilorin. The objectives were to determine and compare the serum prolactin levels in infertile women and fertile controls and to compare the clinical presentations such as menstrual disorders, visual field defects and others, related to prolactin levels in both groups. Methods: The study was conducted in the gynaecology clinics of the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin. Subjects were women in the reproductive age group who presented with infertility while consenting female hospital staff in the same age group, without prior infertility were controls. The sampling method was purposive sampling. Their socio-demographic status, menstrual pattern, history of galactorrhoea, infertility and other symptoms associated with elevated prolactin levels were recorded in the study proforma. All participants were examined and had serum prolactin assay. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (SPSS) version 21. The results were presented in tables. Probability (p) values less than 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant.
