Inappropriate cord hygiene is prevalent in the low resource countries, and in the communities, poor cord care due to improper handling of the neonatal cord is a major contributor to the development of neonatal sepsis, neonatal morbidity and mortality through predisposition to tetanus. Inappropriate cord care is also an important risk factor for the development of omphalitis. Only a few studies have been carried out to determine the prevalence of neonatal sepsis in the community or to determine the contribution of inappropriate and potentially harmful cord care practices (CCP) to the prevalence of neonatal sepsis in Nigeria. The objective of this study was to determine the association between cord care practices and the prevalence of probable neonatal sepsis in communities in Esan Central Local Government Area (ECLGA), Edo State. A further objective was to determine the association between cord care practices and socio-demographic characteristic of the mothers.
