Abstract

Aim To determine the clinical presentations and histopathological types of malignant orbito-ocular tumors in Kano, Nigeria. Materials and Methods Approval was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Committee of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, while permission was obtained from the Medical Directors of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Makkah and ECWA eye hospitals. The study was a descriptive cross sectional hospital based study, involving four tertiary eye hospitals in Kano from 1st June, 2012- 31st May, 2013. All patients with orbito-ocular tumor who presented to the designated hospitals during the study period, consented and met the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Informed consent to participate in the study was obtained from each patient or guardian in case of children. A structured proforma was used to record the findings (history, clinical examinations-ocular/systemic and investigations). Surgery was done depending on the stage of the disease. Specimens were taken to the histopathology laboratory in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano for histology. Data obtained was anlysed with minitab.
