Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine the causes of visual impairment and blindness and the impact of visual rehabilitation among students of schools for the blind in South-Eastern Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and interventional, study conducted in 3 schools for the blind in Umuahia, Isulo and Oji River South-Eastern Nigeria. All consenting students in these schools were recruited for the study. Each participant had visual acuity assessment and a comprehensive eye examination done including slit lamp examination, measurement of intraocular pressure, fundoscopy, central visual field, contrast sensitivity and refraction. Data on participants’ personal details, visual acuity assessment, general assessment, previous eye surgery, eye examination, refraction and low vision aid assessment, was collected using the World Health Organization/Prevention of blindness examination record form. Low vision Aid (LVA) was given to those with some improvement in residual vision after counselling. The impact of LVA was assessed objectively after 4 months by determining any improvement in visual acuity before and after correction and subjectively by recording functional vision using the LV Prasad functional vision questionnaire before and 4 months after correction.
