Aim/Objective To determine the incidence and pattern of corneal astigmatism in patients undergoing manual sutureless small incision cataract surgery (SICS) at the General Hospital, Calabar. Materials and Methods A hospital- based descriptive longitudinal study where non-probability serial recruitment of consenting adult patients aged 18 years and above booked for cataract surgery was done. The study was done between1st July to 1st December 2016. Patients information was entered into a separate proforma and ocular examination including visual acuity, autokeratometry, slit lamp examination and direct fundoscopy was done. Astigmatism was defined as difference between Keratometry 1and 2 readings of ≥ 0.50 Dioptres (D).All patients underwent SICS with posterior chamber intra-ocular lens (PCIOL) implantation. Data analysis was with the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM SPSS) version 20. Categorical variables were reported as frequencies while continuous variables were reported as means. Categorical variables were compared using Pearson’s chi-square test (χ2) while continuous variables were compared using Student’s t-test. A confidence interval of 95% was adopted and p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
