Abstract

Background As the aetiology of preeclampsia remains elusive, researchers have proposed maternal infections as possible triggers in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. The similarities in histologic patterns between artherosclerosis and preeclampsia have led investigators to question the association between Chlamydophila pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae ) infection and preeclampsia, since chronic infection with C.pneumoniae and endothelial dysfunction are also associated with artherosclerosis. Objective To determine whether maternal Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection is associated with preeclampsia. Methods The study was a hospital based case-control study conducted among women attending antenatal care at the Jos University Teaching Hospital. C.pneumoniae antibodies were measured using ELISA in 50 women with preeclampsia (defined according to ACOG criteria) and 50 normotensive and non-proteinuric pregnant women matched for age and parity (+1 S.D). Data was analyzed using STATA 14 software. Chi square and t tests were used for categorical and continuous variables respectively to compare the two groups. A p value <0.05 will be considered statistically significant. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals.
