Aim and objectives:- This is a hospital based case-control study carried out at the Guinness Eye Centre Onitsha Anambra State to assess the quantity of tears produced in adults as well as tear break up time. Materials and Method: One hundred and ten consecutive patients were selected from new patients aged 40 years and above at the Guinness Eye Centre Onitsha. A face to face interview of the subjects with a pretested questionnaire was done to elicit information on their socio - demographic characteristics and ocular health. Ocular examinations done included unaided and pinhole distance visual acuities at 6 metres, pen torch examinations and fundoscopy with a direct Keeler's Ophthalmoscope. The tear break-up time of each patient was measured using a 1 mg, 80 x O.8mm sodium fluorescein strips. The Schirmer's test (without anaesthesia) was done using a 5mm x 35mm Whatmann's filter paper to assess the tear production status. Data obtained were analysed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 16. The student’s t - test and chi – square with alpha at 0.05 were used to explore the relationship between the variables.
