Carcinoma of the cervix is the most common gynaecological cancer and the leading cause of female genital cancer mortality in Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Some studies have implicated oxidative stress in the poor quality of life and progression of cervical cancer. Aim: To investigate the role of oxidative markers in the severity of cervical cancer at Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Study design: This was a case-control study. Methods: Antioxidant levels (glutathione for endogenous antioxidant status and vitamin C for exogenous antioxidant status) and malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid peroxidation were measured in 80 patients with cervical cancer and 120 healthy controls. The cases were divided into 4 different groups according to their stages (I, II, III & IV). Ten milliliters of venous blood was collected from the cervical cancer patients before treatment, and also from the healthy controls.
