Abstract

BACKGROUND Precise estimation of foetal birth weight is one of the most important measures at the beginning of delivery. This is especially important in developing countries where a considerable proportion of births occur at home and at centers without adequate facilities. In these circumstances, diagnosis of macrosomia and low birth weight fetuses can result in timely referral to better equipped hospitals. Therefore, it is essential to study the accuracy of clinical foetal weight estimation for decision making. OBJECTIVES. To compare the accuracy of three clinical methods of estimation of fetal weight in parturients (Johnson’s, Dare’s, Onah’s methods) at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri. METHODS This was a cross sectional study from February to October 2018 where 300 parturients were recruited in the labour ward/prenatal ward. A validated questionnaire was applied after informed written consent. Each woman was examined clinically, her weight recorded, abdominal girthand symphoiofundal height taken. The neonates were then weighed at birth manually, and these were compared to the clinical values estimated. A degree of confidence interval of 95% was used and p-value was set at <0.05.
