Abstract

Background and Aim Rehabilitation affects visual outcome and subsequently affects the quality of life of the blind persons. It is therefore important to have a survey of the resources for vision rehabilitation of the severe visually impaired and blind students in the school with the aim of assessing their quality of life and how the availability of these resources has affected it. METHODS This is a descriptive cross-sectional study of 146 blind pupils in the three schools for the blind in South East Nigeria carried out from February to March, 2017. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. Uncorrected visual acuity of the respondents was checked. To assess how much the resources for rehabilitation have affected their quality of life, a question guide was used to conduct focus group discussion (FGD) with selected eight to ten (8-10) males and females forming two groups and each of these groups were interviewed separately. A total of 146 pupils out of 215 were randomly selected by balloting to participate in an interviewer administered vision-specific quality of life questionnaire to determine their quality of life. A structured questionnaire was used to checklist the resources available for rehabilitation in these schools and also an in-depth interview was held with the headmaster to have a deeper insight on these resources. The results were analyzed using statistical package for the social science (SPSS) version 20.0 for the quantitative analysis while for the qualitative analysis, Based on participant surveys using the Time Trade Off (TTO) method a utility score for each domain was estimated and thereafter multiplication model was used to get a utility score ranging from zero to one when all the six domains were combined. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize the data while Chi square was use to establish the association of Qol with socio-demographic characteristic and pattern of vision. Results were presented as tables, in proportions, and percentage. Multivariate regression analysis was done to ascertain the determinants of overall quality of life dimension.
