Abstract

Fever is an important and frequent reason for children to be presented in emergency rooms. An important but frequently ignored cause of fever is urinary tract infection (UTI). Pyelonephritis as a form of UTI is notorious for its associated morbidity and capacity to cause serious long term complications of renal scarring, hypertension and end stage renal disease, particularly if undetected or poorly treated. Stemming the immediate and long-term complications of UTI demands that affected young children be identified early and effectively managed. This entails knowledge of the epidemiology of the disease, causative organisms, existence of any kidney or tract abnormality and the antibiotics to which they are responsive. This study therefore aimed at determining the epidemiology, bacteriology and antibiogram of febrile UTI in children in Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH)
