AIM: To determine the relative frequency, aetiology, predisposing factors and other factors that can affect visual outcome in patients with corneal ulcer in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo state. METHODOLOGY: The study design was a prospective hospital-based case series. All consecutive new patients of ages 6years and above with corneal ulcer who met the eligibility criteria were recruited for the study. A specially designed interviewer administered questionnaire was used to obtain information on patients’ socio-demographic characteristics like age, sex, occupation, ethnicity, etc; symptoms, duration of symptoms before presentation, past ocular history, systemic illness and self interventions. Detailed anterior and posterior segment eye examinations including slit lamp examination of the corneal lesion, corneal scraping and relevant microbiological studies were conducted for all participants. Patients were managed and followed up for 8weeks after which final visual acuity/outcome was taken. Data was analyzed using the International Business Machine Corporation Statistical Product and Service Solution (IBM SPSS) version 20.0 with odds ratio and 95% confidence interval used where applicable.
