Abstract

Background Pregnancy induced hypertension can be complicated by proteinuria. Unfortunately, urine dipstick that is widely used for detection of proteinuria have been shown to be fraught with error. This creates the need for alternative method which is more accurate for detection proteinuria. Aim The aim of the study was to compare the accuracy of urine dipstick analysis and spot urine protein creatinine ratio to 24-hour urine protein among pregnancy induced hypertensive women. Study Design Cross-sectional study. Method One hundred and five antenatal inpatients with pregnancy induced hypertension were recruited at Obstetrics and Gynecological department of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for the study. Urine was collected over 24-hours, the urine volume and total protein in the 24-hour urine samples were evaluated. Urine dipstick test and spot UPCR in urine samples were compared to 24-hour urine protein. Data collected was analyzed using “MINITAB” statistical software version 12.21. Measured variables were expressed in descriptive statistics; quantitative variables were summarized using range, mean and standard deviation while qualitative variables were presented in percentage. Test of validity were expressed in terms of sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and overall accuracy. ii Comparison tests of validity and accuracy of urine dipstick and UPCR were done using Z- test of proportion. p-value of <0.05 was considered as statistically significant.
