Abstract

Introduction: Effective post-operative analgesia improves patients’ outcome. Particular attention is being paid to NSAIDS either singly or in combination with opiods with the aim to either avoid or reduce opioid side-effects Objective: To evaluate clinical efficacy of diclofenac sodium suppository only, intravenous pentazocine only or the combination for pain management after Caesarean section at FMC, Owerri. Method: A placebo controlled double-blind randomized trial was done for 177 volunteered pregnant women who had caesarean section using spinal anaesthesia in FMC, Owerri. They were randomized into three groups; A, B, C received intravenous pentazocine only, rectal diclofenac only and a combination of both respectively for pain relief after caesarean section. Outcomes included mean pain scores using Visual analogue scale, side-effect profile and patients’ satisfaction using Likert’s scale within 24 hours’ post-operative period. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 21 with level of significance set at p< 0.05. Categorical data was analyzed using chisquare. Means ± standard deviation were calculated for quantitative variables and the difference between the three groups were compared using one-way ANOVA. The relative risk using 95% confidence interval was calculated.
