Aim: To determine the pattern of ocular surface disorders in workers (street sweepers and office cleaners) in Calabar metropolis and assess their awareness and practice of occupational safety. Materials and Method: This was a descriptive cross sectional study conducted among street sweepers and office cleaners. A systematic random sampling and multi stage sampling method was used to select street sweepers and office cleaners respectively for the study. A total of 115 street sweepers and a comparative group consisting of 115 office cleaners were interviewed using a pretested semi-structured interviewer administered questionnaire after which they had an ophthalmic examination. An assessment of dry eye disease was done with Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, Schirmer’s test and tear break up time. Data obtained was analyzed using statistical package for Social Sciences version 20 (SPSS 20). Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were carried out using frequencies, proportions, mean, standard deviation, chi-square and logistic regression. P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
